Battle the Silent Killer and "Get Cuffed!" ®
U.S. Army National Guard enlists support of American Heart Association

U.S. Army National Guard enlists support of American Heart AssociationArlington, VA - January 25, 2007 - The Army National Guard (ARNG) announced a strategic alliance with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) today at the National Guard Bureau Readiness Center located at 111 South George Mason Drive in Arlington, Virginia. The launch of the 2007 "Get Cuffed!" ® blood pressure campaign marks year two of the ARNG's Decade of Health program.

One out of every three American adults suffers from high blood pressure affecting an estimated 72 million. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The estimated direct and indirect cost of high blood pressure in the United States for 2007 is $66.4 billion.

"In recognition of the crucial need for Soldier awareness of and responsibility for health and personal wellness, the ARNG is making a solid commitment to the health of their Soldiers and their communities through the Decade of Health program," said Lieutenant General Clyde A. Vaughn. "The Decade of Health is a 10-year strategic outreach campaign that will promote a healthy force by emphasizing the primary message, "Always Reach, Always There …. Always Healthy."

This alliance leverages and expands the world-wide recognition of the scientific and educational mission of the American Heart Association, and propels the Army National Guard into a major role in America's health promotion and disease prevention movement. "The alliance is expected to increase the health and physical fitness of Army National Guard Soldiers, their Families and their communities," according to Colonel Craig Urbauer, ARNG Chief Surgeon.

"As America focuses on health - we are pleased to team with the Army National Guard to effect change in the lives of over a million ARNG Soldiers and their Families," said Lawrence Sadwin, past Chairman of American Heart Association National Board. "This alliance advances the U.S. Army National Guard into the front lines of the battle against high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke."

The National Guard's "Decade of the Health" includes a multi-faceted media and outreach approach and is offered to the Soldier and his Family via print, web, direct mail and broadcast media.
